Here we are on Day 2 of HP Discover. I'm sure it's daylight outside, but I haven't seen it for 3 days. I feel I need a makeover, but instead I'm in the keynote talk from Jean-Paul Wagner, VP of Technology Services, who is discussing a makeover for IT. Well, ok, I give way.
HP's Enterprise Group talks about the best-of-breed components of technology, servers, storage, and networking, that are brought together in a solution format, delivered by Jean-Paul's organization. Jean-Paul characterised CIO tasks, or challenges if you prefer, as to build and broker, manage cost, deliver ROI, and provide the necessary service levels. These are not new themes, but some of the context has changed. for example, service levels now have a large emphasis on data protection, security, risk and utilization. Personally I'm going to place cost over ROI. Why? Because for the CIO it's more and more becoming about the relationship with the CFO. ROI is one thing, but in IT terms it remains stubbornly an intangible in too many instances, whereas the CIO's ability to manage CASH is becoming a bigger deal. Connected with this is the concept of brokering IT. Any CIO worth their salt must focus on providing the environment to deliver innovation and speed to market. IT cannot be seen to be an anchor on the business.
Influences on the above? Drastic changes in employee and consumer mobility, the Big Data explosion, the move towards Cloud solutions, and the security elements derived from each of the previous. So, and we've heard this often now, a new style of IT is required. What does Jean-Paul bring with his organization? He frames it as total experience. For customers, working with Technology Services should be an easy engagement: having excellence delivered, providing a total customer experience. The enhanced portfolio provides a vaster range of capabilities to support the move towards the New Style of IT.
HP is often about technology, but more and more, Technology Services are being viewed as the makeover technicians.
